Message
The Ministry of Environment is comprised
of four Divisions: Environmental Stewardship Division (ESD),
Environmental Protection Division (EPD),
the Conservation Officer Service (COS),
and the Water Stewardship Division (WSD).
The regional office also combines staff from the
Corporate Services Division. (see map
for details).

Environmental Stewardship Division (ESD)
The Environmental Stewardship Division (ESD) is
responsible for three main program areas: Fish & Wildlife
Management, Ecosystem (habitat) management, Parks &
Protected Area management. Details about these program
areas can be found on the ESD web page.

Environmental Protection Division (EPD)
The Environmental
Protection program administers
the Environmental Management Act and Integrated
Pest Management Act. Staff are responsible for: issuing
permits, approvals,
licences and plans for pesticide use and the discharge
of wastes to the environment; monitoring and reporting
on compliance; assessing environmental impacts of new and
existing projects; monitoring air and water quality; emergency
response to spills and floods; and contaminated site management.

Conservation Officer Service (COS)
The Conservation Officer
Service (COS) is the delivery arm of the Enforcement program
in the Ministry. It works with other professional staff
in the ministry to achieve compliance with provincial and
federal environmental legislation. Conservation officers
are also involved with response to wildlife-human conflicts
where human health and safety are at risk, or where significant
property damage has occurred because of this conflict.

Water Stewardship Division (WSD)
British Columbia’s water resource is one of our most precious and important assets.
From a crucial supply of drinking water, to energy to recreation to irrigation, B.C. water meets many needs for many
people. The Water Stewardship Division (WSD) is responsible for water licensing,
water utility regulation, groundwater protection, source water protection, flood safety, and
drought management.
