The Omineca Region encompasses a vast area of British Columbia representing a diverse array of landscapes, from the flat pine stands of the Interior Plateau to the towering peaks of the central Rocky Mountain range. This diverse set of habitats support such wildlife as grizzly bear, caribou, moose, bull trout and white sturgeon.. The Region includes 81 Protected Areas, totaling 1.1 million hectares, which protects natural landscapes, special natural and cultural features, and provides a range of front and backcountry recreational opportunities for residents and international visitors to British Columbia. The Region is known for its world class hunting, supporting some of the highest recreational moose harvests of any region in the province. Recreational fishing includes easy access to a variety of stocked lakes, to remote fly-in destinations where trophy sized fish abound. Predominant industries include the forestry, mining, and hydroelectric sectors. Staff at the Omineca regional office work to ensure that these activities are in balance with recreation and conservation objectives set by the Province, in accordance with the Ministry's Business Plan.
