Responsibilities of the Regional Operations Branch

Participate in environmental assessment review processes for major new projects.

Administer the authorization process associated with discharges to the environment. This includes pesticide- and waste-management plans; permits; licences and approvals.

Undertake compliance and enforcement activities for the ministry's Environmental Protection authorizations and regulations.
- Monitor air, land and water quality to ensure that the ministry's limits on industrial discharges are protecting the receiving environment.

Participate in airshed planning to manage the collective impacts of air pollution from point sources (e.g., industry smokestacks) and non-point sources (e.g. automobiles).

Take part in establishing BC environmental-protection standards; best-management practices; guidelines and policies.

Manage the cleanup of contaminated sites.
-
Respond to toxic spills (environmental emergencies).
