Responsibilities of the Regional Operations Branch

• Participate in environmental assessment review processes for major new projects.
  
  
• Administer the authorization process associated with discharges to the environment. This includes pesticide- and waste-management plans; permits; licences and approvals.
  
  
• Undertake compliance and enforcement activities for the ministry's Environmental Protection authorizations and regulations.
  
  
• Monitor air, land and water quality to ensure that the ministry's limits on industrial discharges are protecting the receiving environment.
  
  
• Participate in airshed planning to manage the collective impacts of air pollution from point sources (e.g., industry smokestacks) and non-point sources (e.g. automobiles).
  
  
• Take part in establishing BC environmental-protection standards; best-management practices; guidelines and policies.
  
  
• Manage the cleanup of contaminated sites.
  
  
• Respond to toxic spills (environmental emergencies).
