Assessment Reports
Assessment of Hazardous Waste Generators'
Compliance with the Hazardous Waste Regulation
The findings in this report come
from a survey of selected B.C. Generators (BCG) listed in the province's
BCG registration system.
Of the 733 surveys mailed out,
234 surveys were returned by Canada Post due to outdated addresses,
154 responses were received from generators and the remainder
went unanswered. Results highlight problems with the BCG registration
system, the generally poor understanding of the regulatory requirements
by this sector of the industry and the significant amount of
ministry resources required to achieve compliance.
The study developed several recommendations
which have been or will be acted upon.
Below, you will find actions
taken to date or planned, to address the three key recommendations
from the above named report.
Recommendation 1:
Staff in the Lower Mainland
regional office have prepared a draft hazardous waste strategic
plan for the next five years. The plan outlines the priorities
for the ministry in terms of compliance promotion, verification
and enforcement.
Recommendation 2:
A communication plan is being developed as part of the hazardous
waste strategic plan discussed in Recommendation 1 above.
Recommendation 3:
Ministry
staff have prepared several guidance documents and letters that
are being shared with clients to improve understanding of the
regulatory requirements. These documents have also been placed
on the Ministry website and are available at the following link:
